In this second post we will be looking at another content management system, WordPress. WordPress is one of the most widely used content management systems. Whether you use WordPress as a blog or a content management system, one is for sure, its really easy to use for the end user.

I use WordPress alot when building simple and basic websites, due to its simplicity for the end user. There are obviously some pros and cons to using WordPress and I am going to dive into them in detail later.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is an open source blogging tool and content managment system that uses PHP and MYSQL.

Advantages

  • Easy to use Administration area – Easy to navigate in the backend.
  • Built in Gallery – Add a Gallery to every page.
  • Plugins – Thousands of plugins to extend your website.
  • SEO Friendly – WordPress is Search Engine Optimized out of the box. There are two fantastic SEO plugins that make the website even more SEO friendly and will help improve your rankings
  • Themes – Thousands of ready made themes you can personalize.
  • Update – Easy to update the WordPress version and plugins with a click of button.

Disadvantages

  • User Management
  • Updating versions and plugins – Sometimes the plugins arent up to date and dont work the specific wordpress versions
  • Database Queries – Database queries may be very heavy
  • Security can be a problem – There are plugins to make your website even safer.

Summary

In summary WordPress is a powerful blogging tool. It is becoming a more stable CMS and there is some really great development in the works. For a small website this is an ideal CMS to use.
